What is PET Strapping?
First, it's important to know that PET strapping is made from the
same material as plastic beverage bottles (PET). It's known for

The Application Process: Step-by-Step
The application of PET strapping can be manual, semi-automatic, or
fully automatic, but the core principles remain the same.
Step 1: Choosing the Right Strapping
Select the appropriate size (width and thickness) and strength of
PET strapping based on the weight, size, and stability requirements
of your load. For example, a heavy, dense load like bricks requires
thicker, stronger strapping than a light load of empty cardboard
boxes.
Step 2: Positioning the Strapping Around the Load
The strapping coil is placed on a dispenser or fed through an
automatic machine. The strap is guided around the load (e.g., a
stack of boxes on a pallet).
- Manual/Semi-Automatic: The operator pulls the strap from a
dispenser and wraps it around the load by hand.
- Automatic: The machine has an arm or carriage that automatically
wraps the strap around the pallet.
Step 3: Tensioning
This is the most critical step. The strapping is pulled tight to
secure the load.
- How it works: A tensioner (built into a tool or machine) grips the
strap and pulls it with a specific force. PET strapping's
elasticity allows it to be stretched, which creates a constant
clamping force on the load. This force compensates for any slight
compression or shifting during shipping.
- Goal: Apply enough tension to secure the load without damaging the
goods or breaking the strap.
Step 4: Sealing (Joining the Ends)
Once the desired tension is achieved, the two ends of the strap
must be joined to form a secure loop. There are two primary methods
for sealing PET strapping:
Friction Weld (Heat Seal): This is the most common and strongest
method.
- Process: The two overlapping ends of the strap are rubbed
together at high speed under pressure. The friction generates heat,
melting the PET and fusing the ends into a single, monolithic
piece.
- Equipment: Used by semi-automatic tools and automatic machines.
- Advantage: The seal is as strong as the strap itself.
Metal Seals (Crimping):
- Process: A pre-formed metal seal (a small, flat piece of metal)
is placed around the two overlapping ends. A tool called a "sealer"
or "crimper" compresses the seal, deforming it and mechanically
locking the straps in place.
- Equipment: Used with manual tensioners and some specific heavy-duty
applications.
- Advantage: Does not require electricity, making it useful in
certain environments.
Step 5: Cutting
After the seal is made, the strap is cut from the coil. In
automated systems, this happens instantly after sealing. With
manual tools, the operator often uses the tool's built-in cutter or
a separate knife.
